2,450 Visitors; Since April 26, 2006
This statistic is the site meter counter on my blog as time stands still at 4:44PM on 24 July 2006. Honestly, I am pretty impressed and wowed by this large number, espacially since I only started out blogging for less than six months. But frankly speaking this is still relatively a far cry away from famous bloggers like XiaXue whom average about 13,000 visitors per day through her blog site! Not just stopping here.. there are also many blogs out there which are closing in on the 10,000 hit marks daily... astonishing numbers! I am simply amazed how it is possible for these sites to attract such a large number of visitors!
Sexual exploits.... Hot gossips..... Trash talking..... Condemning posts towards government...
These are some of the "HOT" topics featured in almost all of these famous blog sites.. coupled with their soaring counters, it only goes to show that people (espacially youths) do enjoy reading about all these things! On one hand, I do applaude these writers for their gifted talents in blogging and ability to engage the youths .. and in many ways they have become the historymakers of this generation! In time to come, they may just be the Hall of Famers in the blogging arena. Hats off to them...
However, I am also deeply concerned. Looking at the kind of topics discussed and shared across these blogs, what kind of values are we passing down to the youths? Yes.. historymakers these famous bloggers may be.. but will they be remembered for the good cause or worse?
I am not trying to be a saint here... but a good question to ask ourselves is, why has the man-made technology of Internet.. in return been used as a tool or channel which devalues the human moral standards? In this area of blogging, we have almost unlimited freedom to do whatever we wish, write whatever we want, and broadcast anything on the Internet but I find that many have exploited this freedom. Writing condemning remarks about people and policies; Broadcasting pornography and sexually explicit materials; All these may sound fun, catchy or even interesting, but the long term consequences are heavy prices to pay. You may not feel it's as serious as it sounds.. but let's look at things in perspective...
Sexual exploits - greatly shared and publicised across most blogs. What kind of values does it pass down to the youths? Pre-maritial sex is OK? Think again.. no matter how young you are, would you want your children next time to absorb such values and live a frivilous lifestyle?
Frustration channel - Many are also using blogs as channels of ventilating the anger and frustrations. Vulgarities, abusive remarks and hatred comments flies around everywhere. Have we lost the human touch of communication that even the slightest problems in human relationships cannot be worked out? If you take note of such bloggers, most of them lead a double life; totally very different personality off-computer and on-computer. The danger of losing ourselves in the virtual world... Beware
Have we empowered ourselves beyond our ability to control ourselves?????
Personally, I would like to make a strong stand of awareness here and urge everyone that we DO NOT need to be crowd followers! Just because everyone writes this way, we do not need to follow suit too, neither do we need to receive such inputs!
We must learn to make the choice to DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!!! It doesn't mean that we become boring people.. we can still live out a dynamic and radical life, but learn to do it the right way. The things that we like to do may not always be the right thing to do. Don't shortchange our lives just for a moment of fun and freedom.
The world has enough of crowd followers who simply do not know what they are doing. What the world needs are people who dare to be a historymaker for a good cause and make positive impact into lives of people!
Do you dare? Or are you a cowardy crowd follower?
