Are you a Hokkien Peng (Soldier)???

Posted by Mr.Keropok

Hokkien Peng [pronounced as Hock-Kian-Peng] - noun

  • A person with passive and non-chalant attitude a.k.a "bo-chup".

  • Needs to be pushed persistently to complete task being assigned.

  • High chance that task done is in sloppy manner without putting in any effort.

  • Only does whatever is being told and would not make effort to go extra mile.

  • Preference is to slack, relax and take easy way out in every situation.

  • Pause. Take a moment to reflect about our attitude at home, workplace, school or in our social circle. Do we have the "Hokkien Peng" mentality?

The Coxford dictionary at www.talkingcock.com defines hokkien peng as:

The quintessential private soldier - salt of the earth, if not downright earthy. Forms the foundation of our armed forces, and the persons without whom this Singlish dictionary would not be possible.

Thanks Takumi for your insights! :)

Yupz, I also appreciate this aspect of the hokkien peng. Somehow in my army working experience with them, a particular strength that i noted in them was loyalty! :)

Haha.. but there are always black sheeps in the midst. Just highlighting some areas we can learn from too.

Thanks for sharing too! New insights!

I can add that their sole purpose in uniform or any armed forces is to go for smoking breaks.

They tend to do things fast though. So that they can smoke more.

"Sergeant, can we go smoke or not?"
