"Disappointment comes when we do the measurement." - Jackie Pullinger, Missionary in Hong Kong working amongst the drug addicts
How true this statement is! We get disappointed when we measure and start comparing ourselves with the people around us! We compare our results, our achievements in our games and CCAs, the amount of pocket money we get from our parents, the kind of teachers or parents that we have.... basically we like to compare EVERYTHING!
What happens then? Those who are better off may just become proud of what they have. But more dangerously, to those whom do not have, we get disappointed and start complaining. Have we ever paused for a moment and wondered why we seem to spend our whole life complaining? I went through those times before...
- I studied so hard in secondary school but got average grades. My friends studied and still played, but yet could get top grades in class! I compared and complained that it was not fair...
- I was always a good boy generally. But for all the good things I did, my parents never affirmed me. But when I did one thing wrong, I would get a blasting from them! But my friends' parents were not like that! I compared and complained that it wasn't fair either...
- I play soccer with my friends everyday in school days, but was always demoted to playing goalkeeper because of my horizontal-expanded size (fat). I never got the chance of playing up front as a striker and experience the sensation of scoring goals like my other friends. I compared, complained and grumbled that it's really not fair.....
Endless complains... probably like what HDB town council would receive daily.
The hard truth of life is that it is never fair. By choosing to focus on these things, it really doesn't make life any easier for yourself. Another inspiring quote from Jackie Pullinger:
"Everyone has their own race (in life). There's no need to admire others. You don't need to run other people's race. Run YOUR own race!"
Stop comparing, sulking and complaining that things are not fair or unjustified. You only get yourself more depressed and disappointed, crippling yourself to a halt.
The important thing is to finish your OWN race, and not trying to cross over and be someone else.
